Fairfield Electric Cooperative sponsored Blythewood-area student Kameron Haynie to attend the Washington Youth Tour last month in Washington, D.C. While there, Haynie was elected by his fellow South Carolina delegates to represent the state on the national Youth Leadership Council, sponsored by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Haynie’s first task as a YLC member is to return to Washington, D.C., this week to attend Basecamp, a program designed to equip the 45 YLC students from across the country with resources needed for their year of service. It is composed of four days of hands-on workshops, meetings with NRECA’s leaders and team-building activities.  

“I’m expecting to grow tremendously as a leader, both this week and in the next year as I represent SC on a national level,” said Haynie. “YLC is a chance for me to get involved in something larger than my own school and allows me to be part of a community that serves.”

Over the next year, Haynie will complete a service project in partnership with Fairfield Electric, develop and deliver a speech and attend monthly virtual meetings where he will hone leadership and advocacy skills. 

“Fairfield Electric is thrilled to work with Kameron this year to expand his skills as a leader and help him contribute to our local community,” said FEC Communications Coordinator Stephanie Martin. “It’s quite an honor to be selected to serve on Youth Leadership Council and we should all be very proud of Kameron’s ability to represent our state on a national level.”

The YLC term will end in February with a trip to NRECA’s PowerXchange and TechAdvantage conference in San Diego.

Haynie is a senior at Westwood High School.
