Each year, four local high school juniors are chosen to represent Fairfield Electric Cooperative on the Washington Youth Tour. The week-long educational trip gives students a chance to see government in action, visit historical sights and learn about electric cooperatives.
Fairfield Electric Cooperative's representatives travel to Washington D. C with approximately 60 high school juniors from other South Carolina electric cooperatives. Once there, the South Carolina representative's join nearly 1,500 students representing cooperatives from around the country.
Fairfield's Youth Tour representatives are chosen on the basis of their school and community involvement, communication skills and knowledge about cooperatives.
In addition, the selected students are eligible to compete for the R.D. Bennett $5000 scholarship and compete for a position on the National Youth Leadership Council. The tour is held during June of each year and applications are taken January through the end of February.
